Bath Bombs

My kids elementary school has a “High Interest Day”, where the kids can sign up for 3-4 classes in the day that are of particular interest to them, all taught by parents or special guests.  I volunteered for this every year, and taught the “Do it yourself bath and body products” for 4 years.  This is the bath bomb we taught at that session.

Bath Bomb 1

Ingredients:

Dry:

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup citric acid
  • 1/4 cup epsom salt

Wet:

  • 1 tablespoon almond oil
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 5 drops essential oil
  • 5 drops food coloring (optional)
Bath Bomb 2

Mix the dry ingredients first.  The baking soda and citric acid are the key ingredients and all that matters in creation of the chemical reaction with water.  We have gone through other phases of this recipe with corn starch and other ingredients, but found we didn’t need them.

In a separate bowl, mix the wet ingredients.  Add half the wet ingredients to the dry and mix with a spoon.  We enjoy the essential oil for orange with yellow/orange coloring.  We also love rose essential oil with a pink color dye.

Bath Bomb Sand

Getting the ratio correct can be tricky. After the half wet mixture is added, I like to add a little at a time.  The final mixture should have the consistency of damp sand, and should hold the shape of your clenched inner fist.  If it’s “sizzling”, it’s too wet and you’ve added too much wet ingredient.  It will continue to expand in the mold and you won’t be able to pull it out in a the formed shape.

Bath Bomb Mold

When the mixture is at the right consistency, it’s time to place in the molds.  We bought some metal round molds on Amazon.  To prepare, overfill each half of the mold and squish together.  Set aside.

Bath Bombs

Let the molds sit for at least 24 hours, where they will harden.  Then you can store in a container or bag for regifting.
